"The Alto Knights" is an upcoming American biographical crime drama directed by Barry Levinson, with a screenplay by Nicholas Pileggi. The film features Robert De Niro in a dual role, portraying the infamous 1950s mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. The narrative delves into the intense rivalry between these two figures, culminating in a failed assassination attempt on Costello, leading to his eventual retirement from the Mafia. 

The project has been in development since the 1970s, with Warner Bros. Pictures officially greenlighting it in August 2022. Barry Levinson, known for his work on films like "Rain Man" and "Bugsy," was brought on board to direct. Nicholas Pileggi, acclaimed for his screenwriting in "Goodfellas" and "Casino," penned the script, bringing authenticity and depth to the portrayal of organized crime.

Robert De Niro's involvement was confirmed early in the development process, taking on the challenging task of playing both Genovese and Costello. This dual role showcases De Niro's versatility and dedication to his craft. The film also stars Debra Messing as Bobbie Costello, Frank's wife, and Kathrine Narducci as Anna Genovese, Vito's wife. Cosmo Jarvis portrays Vincent Gigante, adding depth to the ensemble cast.

Principal photography commenced in December 2022, with Ohio serving as the primary filming location. The production utilized various sites, including parts of Greene County and the Cincinnati metropolitan area, to authentically recreate the 1950s New York setting. The use of vehicle vinyl wraps on 1950s-era cars and trucks was employed to ensure period accuracy, making the vehicles appear new for the film.

The film's production faced several challenges, including delays due to industry strikes. Originally titled "Wise Guys," the film underwent a title change to "The Alto Knights" in October 2023. Despite these hurdles, the production team remained committed to delivering a high-quality film that authentically portrays the complexities of its characters and the era.
