The star, best known for her role on Beverly Hills 90210, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Since then, she has been open about her health struggles. She said her dog Bowie, named after the late David Bowie, had an uncanny intuition about her health issues. That was before she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
The Tennessee native recalled her dog obsessively sniffing her right side. It was the same side where the cancer was later discovered, signaling an early warning that something was wrong.
Following the diagnosis and treatments, including surgery and chemotherapy, Bowie's behavior changed and he became even more protective. Shannen described her dog's presence as "insanely protective," making it difficult for anyone to get close to her. This demonstrated the deep bond they shared.
Shannen's resilient spirit was a gift from her mother, Rosa. In a candid November 2023 interview, the "Beverly Hills 90210" star revealed that her mother was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm when she was just eight years old, which gave her a fierce spirit.

Shannen also mentioned the importance of her brother, her children, and her pets in her life. This highlighted the strong bonds that kept her grounded and motivated.
In an April episode of her podcast "Let's Be Clear," Shannen shared that her main concern was for her mother amid her ongoing health issues. The late actress expressed concern for her frrrrrrrrffffffffffffffffffffffff, noting that it would be incredibly difficult for her.
Shannen then stressed her desire to avoid burdening her mother with unnecessary responsibilities. She noted that she did not want her to have to deal with several storage rooms full of furniture.
