An unexpected appearance by Oprah Winfrey at the Democratic National Convention and a callout to “Childless Cat Ladies”…

She delivered powerful remarks in which she touched on Kamala Harris’ history-making nomination for president – and offered a dig at comments made by Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance that have since gone viral. Oprah Winfrey also made a surprise appearance at the third day of the Democratic National Convention in 2024. Winfrey, who is 70 years old, took the stage on Wednesday, August 21, and told the crowd at the United Center in Chicago that Harris, who had officially secured the Democratic nomination for president in 2024 earlier this month, is passionate about “justice and freedom and the glorious, fighting spirit necessary to pursue that passion.”

An unexpected appearance by Oprah Winfrey at the Democratic National Convention and a callout to “Childless Cat Ladies”…

“And soon, and very soon, we’re going to be teaching our daughters and sons about how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father — two idealistic immigrants — grew up to become the 47th president of the United States,” according to Winfrey. “That is the best of America.”

Winfrey made a brief mention of the night’s topic, which was “freedom,” in her comments. She said, “There are people who want you to see our country as a nation of us against them, people who want to scare you, who want to rule you.”

“There are many who would have you think that assault firearms are totally safe while books are really hazardous. She continued by saying, “There is a proper way to worship, and there is a wrong way to love… but here’s the thing: when we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us.”

In a different part of her address, Winfrey said that the majority of people, despite the fact that we are divided, “would still help you in a heartbeat if you were in trouble.”

According to Winfrey, when a house is on fire, “we don’t ask” about the ethnicity or religion of the people who live there; rather, “we just try to do the best we can to save them.”

“And if the place happens to belong to a childless  cat lady — well, we try to get that cat out, too,” Winfrey remarked in response to Vance’s statements, in which he said that the nation was being ruled by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.” Winfrey was referring to Vance’s statement.

Winfrey’s words on stage were preceded by a short video titled American Family: A video About Freedom. The film was directed by portrait photographer Platon and filmmaker and journalist Scott Dadich, and it was produced by Godfrey Dadich Partners.

Throughout the course of the movie, interviews are conducted with a diverse spectrum of people, couples, and families, including LGBTQ+ families, chosen families, and conventional families, to discuss what “freedom” means to them.

A few days after it was anticipated that Harris would become the first woman to occupy the position of vice president, as well as the first person of African or Asian descent to do so, Winfrey gave an interview to PEOPLE in the year 2020.

In my opinion, the significance that she has for women all across the globe is just remarkable. According to Winfrey, “we are unable to even measure it for women in the United States and elsewhere.” “Because you see someone who looks like you in this role, you see what is possible for yourself,” she said. Without a doubt.”
